Vince Cable addresses members and business leaders in the East Midlands

The Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, The Right Honourable Dr Vince Cable MP visited the East Midlands on Thursday 31st May and spoke to a mixed audience which included members and Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) business leaders from across the region at a special private fundraising event laid on by Nottingham City Liberal Democrats.  The evening proved to be a great success by attracting over 100 guests for a 3 course meal and Asian style entertainment – Whilst party members were of course present, many of the people and business leaders in attendance were not traditional Liberal Democrats.

Vince delivered a riveting after dinner speech to a fascinated audience about banking reforms, executive pay, transparency and separation of high street and investment banking, the need to promote a forward thinking skills strategy, encouraging overseas investment in UK industry, the Euro-crisis and its potential impact on British banks and the economy. He also spoke of the need for banks to do more to lend to small businesses and in particular to encourage investment in innovation and to support a culture of entrepreneurship.

This has proved to be a wonderful way of promoting diversity through interacting with and communicating our message to those parts of the public which we very often fail to get close to. Similar events fronted by our Ministers within minority communities should be supported across the country…it’s a great way of breaking down negative perceptions and barriers, building support, raising important funding and recruiting much needed members. Vince Cable kindly took up our offer to address minority businesses in the region and we are extremely grateful for his positive and supportive response – he had a fantastic reception from everybody present but most importantly from non Liberal Democrats.
