Euro candidate Issan Ghazni urges Lib Dems to help win in Gainsborough

SAMSUNGEuro candidate Issan Ghazni made a rallying call to campaign for victory as the party fights two important by-elections in the East Midlands.

Ghazni hit the streets of Gainsborough for a day of campaigning and praised the two local candidates, Lesley Rollings who is running for Lincolnshire county council and Barry Coward who hopes to be elected onto West Lindsey district council.

Both elections will take place next Thursday, 19th December, and Ghazni urged members in the region to help the party to a double win.

He said it was important the party triumphed, not least because local residents remember how chaotic the Independent-controlled council was until the Lib Dems took over in 2011.

“The town council was run into the ground by the Independents’ and virtually went bankrupt. We must never go back to that”, Ghazni said.

He joined an Action Day in Gainsborough to support Barry and added: “We have an excellent local candidate in Barry who has a solid track record of action and standing up for local people.”

Ghazni, pictured with Barry and Guy Granger, secretary of the East Midlands regional executive, spent a day leafleting and discussing local campaign issues.

Ghazni congratulated local campaigners for their efforts towards the European election campaign, including delivering a Euro survey to households.

“Gainsborough is important to getting Bill Newton-Dunn re-elected as our MEP and their contribution is definitely noted”, he added.

Having a well deserved Indian after leafleting in Corby!

What a wonderful way to complete a short leafleting session in Corby today? After braving the rain and cold weather, Chair of Nottingham City Liberal Democrats Issan Ghazni, and former Northampton Councillor Prince Sadeq Choudhury decided to rest and re-charge their batteries by enjoying an Indian meal! They were joined by Leicester City Liberal Democrats activist, Daniel Henry who was also in Corby on the by-election campaign trail.

Whilst we are indeed getting a lot of support and people coming into Corby campaign HQ from across the region…the pace of activities will clearly increase the closer we get to the election date.  So the key message I have for members is to get out there often and to encourage others do whatever they can to support Jill Hope in achieving a great result for the party!

Nottingham Lib Dems win Newsletter of the Year award at Autumn Conference.

At Autumn Federal Conference the City of Nottingham Liberal Democrats were awarded the prize for Best Members Newsletters of the Year.

Scott Walker, Campaign Co-ordinator, collected the trophy from Nick Clegg. Scott said “I’m really pleased because we made a conscious decision to change our newsletters this year. We had a lot of positive comments from local members about the style and content.  We’ve also started to ask people to choose whether to receive it by post or email to help us move towards a more enivronmentally friendly newsletter.”

Issan Ghazni, Chair of Nottingham City Liberals Democrats, said “We as a local party are proud of the hard work Scott has put in to our new Members Newsletter.  It is through his commitment in leading the development of our communications with members that we have the newsletter we have today.  He is an asset to our party and I’m glad he received this award on our behalf from Nick Clegg.”

Issan Ghazni attends European Dinner in Leicestershire

Nottingham City Party Chairperson, Issan Ghazni attended a European Dinner event on Friday 31st August in Rearsby, Leicestershire. The evening was organised by the East Midlands Regional Policy Officer Phil Knowles and supported by Bill Newton Dunn MEP and the Regional Chairperson Tony Rogers.

The event was well attended, the food was great and the company was very interesting!

Bill Newton Dunn as always gave a great presentation on Europe and took questions from guests in the audience. He spoke about the importance of being positive about Europe on the doorstep and that we need to constantly get our messages out through Focus Newsletters.

Stuart Bray spoke of the importance of canvassing and doorstep contact…he argued that we should allow members of the public to vent any anger they have…but we must keep talking to them. Evidence has shown, according to Stuart that Lib Dem Voters who are angry eventually do come back to voting for us if we allow them enough opportunities to pass on to us their anger over the coalition and the austerity drive – there was much to learn.

Overall, it proved a nice way for people to get together and talk about Lib Dem European policy whilst enjoying a meal in a relaxing environment…I and my colleagues from Nottingham certainly had a great time!

Thanks to Phil Knowles for organising such a memorable event.

Get out there and give us a head start in Corby!

This weekend saw Nottingham City and Leicester Liberal Democrats working together and campaigning in the Corby by-election!

Although the by-election hasn’t been called yet, there are still many activists from across the region making their way regularly to Corby to give our campaign team and Jill Hope a head start.

The weather was wonderful and the routes were do-able. Both Labour and the Tories are out and about campaigning and delivering literature. This was evidenced by a number of Labour and Tory leaflets we picked up along the way – It is important therefore that what we lack in funds at this stage must be made up in regularity of delivery and a strong presence on the ground selling our message and promoting Liberal Democrats achievements in Government. This will give our campaign team in Chris Stanbra, Stuart Bray and Michael Mullaney the early advantage when competing with the Labour machine and loads of Tory money.

A strong result in Corby will send a powerful message to the public and media that we are a force to be reckoned with in British politics and that we mean business, both now during the remaining term of this coalition and beyond! It will also state our claim to having a unique identity and a unique set of policies….one which the electorate still recognise and support!

Both the Leicester and Nottingham teams bumped into one another in Corby and decided to campaign together…this led to a productive and pleasant afternoon of activity. You must try it…its good fun!

The Nottingham team consisted of Issan Ghazni, Scott Walker, Barbara Pearce and Jenny Coggles – The Leicester team consisted of Scott Kennedy-Lount and Daniel Henry.

Get out there and campaign to win in Saxilby

Issan Ghazni, Chair of Nottingham City Liberal Democrats took a small team of activists across to Lincolnshire this weekend to campaign for Charles Shaw in the County Council by-election. Voters will be going to the polls on September 6 to elect a replacement for the popular Ray Sellars.

Both Cllr David Cotton (pictured) and the late Cllr Ray Sellars have a wonderful track record of hard work in the local community as we found out on the doorstep – they have a reputation for getting things done!

Charles Shaw (pictured) lives locally and has a long experience of supporting community groups. A trustee of Lincolnshire Council for Voluntary Youth Services, he is well aware of the needs of young people and works with local businesses creating opportunities for them. With three grown up children and as a former lay member of the health authority he is well aware of family and health needs and of urban and rural differences. He is a fantastic and hard working Liberal Democrat candidate who deserves everybody’s support. Please get out there and do whatever you can to support a hard working local team.
